Prepared food, a huge sandwich, and Birichino Vin GrisWine Feature:
Birbet by Monchiero Carbone

Birbet is made by on-the-skins fermentation of brachetto grapes grown in the Roero. This variety stands out for its aromatic qualities, which are rather similar to those of Moscato. Birbet is a sweet wine. It is ruby-red in color, almost garnet, with a very fine mousse and a soft, smooth taste that is round, well-balanced and attractive. Its intense aromas are best noted when it is served young and with sweets at the finale of a meal. And may we suggest this Divine Chocolate Bar.

Prepared food, a huge sandwich, and Birichino Vin GrisWine Feature:
2009 George Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages, France

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “Duboeuf’s largest single cuvee – their 2009 Beaujolais-Villages, assembled from six different villages and 15 lots from different growers, and destined for the U.S. – is brimming with ripe blackberry and cassis; mouth-filling and plush; and retaining an attractive primary juiciness and hint of berry skin tartness that serves for some invigoration as well as contrast to the wine’s sense of sweetness in the finish…an excellent value that far surpasses the quality of the corresponding 2008.”

Prepared food, a huge sandwich, and Birichino Vin GrisWine Feature:
2010 Birichino, Vin Gris, California

Sometimes picking a wine to feature includes research into seasons, trends and experts. This time Rosie, Kilauea Town Market & Deli's manager, was simply asked to pick a wine by its label. She chose a fantastic Vin Gris produced by John Locke and Alex Krause of Boony Doon fame.

Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya recommends Birichino's 2010 Vin Gris for great summer time food pairing. This Vin Gris enlivens many a savory dish including grilled fish, roast pork loin and salade niçoise. Szechwan peppercorns, chili-oil, and platters of charcuterie and antipasti get along famously with her.

And the label that captured Rosie's attention was created by Annabelle Verhoye, a New York illustrator born in Germany and raised in France. She has contributed extensively to American, European and Asian magazines and journals such as The New Yorker, Vogue, Elle, Condé Nast Traveler, The (Asian) Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Her clients have included Walt Disney, Playboy, Taschen, Chronicle Books, and Bonny Doon Vineyard.

Joseph Phelps Cabernet sitting on a shelf in front of a red wallWine Feature:
2007 Joseph Phelps Vineyards, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California

WineExpress.com says:
"A legendary wine, Joseph Phelps Cabernet is one of Napa Valley's best known and most admired reds. Pioneer Phelps planted his vineyards in an old Napa Valley cattle ranch back in the 1970's and produced wines that were some of the best the Valley had seen. The tradition continues today as their Cab is 100% estate grown and garners rave reviews. Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator both scored this 2007 91 points, Parker saying 'The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa may be the finest regular cuvee produced here in nearly two decades. Its dense ruby/purple hue is followed by an opulent bouquet of cassis, blue fruits, crushed rocks, and floral undertones. Pure, juicy, deep, medium to full-bodied, and loaded, this 2007 should drink beautifully young, yet keep for 15-20+ years."

Wine FeatureMolly Dooker Wines ©happyhourdesign

Mainland wine connoisseurs are surprised to find that we still have some of the Mollydooker wines available for purchase. The Australian wine phenomenon, lovechild of Sparky and Sarah Marquis, has received great reviews since it's inception in 2005. The Australian powerhouse wine couple is using revolutionary farming techniques combined with years of experience to create the flavors they are looking for. Their passion is reflected in Mollydooker's undeniable presence. Known for concentration of flavors and intensity complimented by structure and layers of complexity. Aussie for left-handed, Mollydooker is named in honor the many lefties at the winery, including Sarah and Sparky. These are very sensual wines; not to be missed. They also have a great artwork on the labels and a fun entertaining website a www.mollydookerwines.com.

THE VIOLINIST- Verdelho, 90 points Wine Advocate- Tropical aromas with flavors of melon, baked apple, toast and mango. Creamy, ripe and round with a beautiful mouth-feel that ends in a touch of tartness. Named in memory of Sarah's violin playing days (being forced to play right-handed in order not to poke her neighbors in the orchestra) this wine is allowed to be entirely what it was meant to be. Intense, extracted flavors yet crisp and refreshing. Such a treat!

TWO LEFT FEET- Shiraz Cabernet Merlot Blend, 90 points Wine Advocate- This dark dense purple color of the blend foreshadows the deep intense flavors to come. Nose of butterscotch, plum and white chocolate. Flavors of sandalwood, blueberries, blackberry jam and Asian spices. Dense, sweet and layered, beautiful in the glass, yet not overdone. I would risky my toes any day for this dance partner. Delicious.

THE BOXER- Shiraz, 91 points Wine Spectator- A GIANT with a sweet smokey nose of vanilla, violets and spice. Red fruit flavors of cherry, raspberry and pomegranate, along with sweet spice, blueberry and a touch of cedar box. The deep color, dense sweet fruit, structured tannins, creamy mouth feel and long long finish are a hedonistic delight. With consistently great reviews, this is the wine that started the Mollydooker craze. Try it with a hearty meal and this cool crisp weather we have been having.
