KOYOBUKI IMPORTS
Kotobuki has been importing high designed Japanese artistry since 1976. They provide a wide array of crafts from Japan including ceramics, kitchenware, ironware, lacquer/wood/bamboo, home decor/garden, origami, and more.
Featured this month are the Bento Boxes, Tea Canisters and Maneki Neko Piggy Banks.
The Japanese Bento (lunchbox) has been around since the Fifth Century and has gone through many changes in material, design, popularity and function. As recently as the 1980s, the Bento has made a big comeback. Kong Lung Trading has gorgeous new Bentos from Kotobuki starting at $45.
Japanese tea canisters are beautiful, decorative, and cost effective. Why wouldn't one of these Kotobuki Tea Canisters make your tea drinking experience more pleasurable? They're so cute! Kotobuki Tea Canisters from $35.
The Maneki Neko, literally "Beckoning Cat" or Lucky Cat, is believed to bring good luck to the owner. The sculpture is of a cat beckoning with an upright paw. In the design of the sculptures, a raised left paw supposedly attracts money, while a raised right paw protects it. These Lucky Cats by Kotobuki also ensure financial success because they are piggy banks! Or is that a kitty bank? Starting at $39.

Deborah’s Pick:
LACQUER BOXES
Lacquered boxes have been around for thousands of years. Originally created as an inexpensive alternative to turtle shell or ivory boxes, these super sturdy paper crafts are a staple in Asia. They were used for special, functional purposes such as carrying water, storing rice, or even as specific as for carrying sweets to a wedding party.
These boxes come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.
Kong Lung Trading carries boxes from Pacific Connection and Sakai Toki. Prices from $40 to $150.

MIDDLE KINGDOM

Made in China.
You probably don't remember when that was a good thing. But Middle Kingdom strives to revive the luxurious connotation of "Made in China" in their porcelain. Bo and Alison Jia resurrected a reverence for classical Song and Ming aesthetics, which translate well into the modern world.
Their craft is uniquely beautiful and at each stage of creation great attention is paid to quality, workmanship and adherence to the highest standards.
Please visit Kong Lung to see these wonderful and special pieces from Middle Kingdom. Individual prices from $38 to $41. Sets from $74 to $498.

Olive & Mochi’s Pick:
NAMBU TEKKI TOOL BOTTLE OPENERS
This is so dad! These classic tools hand-forged in traditional Nambu Tekki are handsome and useful. The heavy iron pieces pop bottle tops with ease and are an attractive ornament hung along walls or kitchen backsplashes. Nambu Cast Iron was first made in the middle of the 17th century in Iwate, Northern Japan. A master from Kyoto was summoned there to create an iron pot for a tea ceremony, and it was the beginning of the Nambu Tekki (Cast Iron) craft. It became exemplary of Japanese Traditional Craft, and is still popular today. The black color is the result of a Japanese lacquer glaze call urushi which prevents rust.
Choose from hammer, pincers, pliers, and wrench. Prices from $25 to $45.

BITE ME
A Stomach-Satisfying, Visually Gratifying, Fresh-Mouthed Cookbook
by Julie Albert & Lisa Gnat

Passionate eaters and skilled feeders, these dedicated mothers and businesswomen are full of beans, basil, balsamic vinegar, butter…you get the picture. "What has always been so great for us is that we complement each other, we admire each other for our differences and similarities and that, most important, we make each other laugh."
Bite Me is the 272-page result of the kitchen odyssey these two sisters embarked on. First self-published in Canada, Bite Me went on to win the 2010 and 2011 Independent Publishers Book Award Silver Medals for cookbooks and has sold over 20,000 copies.

THE ART OF THE MUSCLE CAR
by David Newhardt, photos by Peter Harholdt
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
"Just what is a Muscle Car?” Road Test magazine asked in its June 1967 issue. The answer: “Exactly what the name implies. It is a product of the American car industry adhering to the hot rodder’s philosophy of taking a small car and putting a BIG engine in it…The Muscle Car is Charles Atlas kicking sand in the face of the 98 hp weakling." Unconcerned with the style or sophistication of its European counterparts, the American muscle car was built for straight-line speed and quickly became the darling of the power-hungry racer and serious gearhead.
In the intervening years, these down-and-dirty, high-performing beauties have earned their place in the automotive pantheon. As prized by collectors and aficionados as they are by denizens of garages and drag strips, these cars now fetch millions of dollars at auctions and feature in any story of America’s automotive glory days. The icons of muscle car art are on full display in this lavishly illustrated volume, each described in a detailed essay followed by a gallery of photographs that capture the art of the muscle car at its finest.

KEVIN O'BRIEN STUDIO THROW PILLOWS
Since it’s inception in a barn in 1990, KOBS’ products have changed the lives of all who have come in contact with them. Kevin hand built everything in the beginning including the equipment that was used to make the products. Quality control was always the focus, and Kevin kept everything within eyesight of his drawing table.
On a trip to Nepal, Kevin realized that there were people who were better equipped and more experienced to handle the intricate and delicate nature of the production of his pillows, scarves, bedding and rugs.
Additionally Kevin found a small number of skilled craftsmen in Vietnam and India, and constructed textile workshops with his own equipment. Even now in China, Kevin has hand-picked skilled artisans, set up a small studio and created a situation where he can be sure that they are not participating in any of the unsavory practices that people worry about when it comes to Chinese Manufacturing. All of this is done to provide you with the finest hand-dyed textiles available.

Patty’s Pick: RAND PAPELE JEWELRY
Jewelry that Reflects Deep Philosophical Beliefs.
This collection of matte and oxidized sterling silver jewelry is the collaborative effort of artists Judith Rand and Eben Papele. The combined vision of these two artists produces inventive designs with eclectic influences from the Victorian and rustic jewelry of antiquity to industrial and modern design. Employing a wide range of fabrication techniques in their New York’s Hudson Valley studio, this design duo places great value on the transformative nature of the creative process and hopes that their jewelry reflects this.
These unique designs are an outstanding find for the holidays. Why not make someone on your list happy by giving them one of these incredible pieces?
Deborah’s Pick: FUNKTION APRONS
Not Your Grandmother’s Apron
Keep yourself tidy in the kitchen this holiday by covering up with a fun and flirty Funktion apron. These aprons are a patchwork of vintage styled printed material and have a shabby chic feel, but are hip and sassy. With cascading ruffles or the sweetest trim detail, you will look so good that when your company arrives you might want not want to take it off.
Funktion’s dish towels, oven mitts and aprons will make any kitchen a little brighter and will hopefully inspire some you to explore a few new recipes.

Tori Richard’s apparel is a true reflection of good design and art that is inspired by trends and cultures from around the world. This Hawaiian company’s philosophy is based in the honor or creating fine garments to resonate a life of luxury and style.
Tori Richard began creating men’s wear in 1969, almost 20 years before the founding of Tommy Bahama—a point of pride for Debra when selling these beautiful garments. Tori Richard is a true family business and offers only original prints and artwork on their products, setting them apart from other resort wear companies. Janet’s Pick: ESTEBAN
An Appeal to your Senses
Southern France, the fragrance capital of the world, is home to Esteban—a company started in the late 70’s by Jan Max Esteban. This company has been creating scents and imaginative products that convey a love of travel and discovery through fragrance. Esteban is known for their style, which intertwines Mediterranean and Japanese sensibilities, allowing these irresistible aromas to tell their story in your home and to carry you away to a far away land.
Kong Lung Trading carries Esteban’s room sprays, scented boxes, refresher oils and diffusers. The scented boxes are delightful little gift packages containing ceramic pieces, seaglass, river rocks or tribal beads inbued with the essence of the collection’s scent. Each scented box contains different objects that represents the story of the collection’s distinctive smell.
When Janet was asked why she chose to feature Estaban as her pick of the month she replied, “I think these will make really nice gifts for the holidays and the price is excellent. I love these.” Her favorite scent, Ambre, is one of the company’s most popular. It is described as a subtle Amber fragrance, enriched with bergamot and neroli, a serene arousing caress of precious woods and lingering sensuality of vanilla.
The fragrance of Teck & Tonka is a souvenir of Africa, conjuring wooden houses full of spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, clove…Teck & Tonka revives this blend, one of the most entising in the history of perfumes. Each fragrance tells a story, which one will you choose?
Patty’s Pick: HEATHER BENJAMIN JEWELRY
Sparkle this Holiday in a Heather Benjamin Drusy Necklace
What is a drusy? A drusy refers to a rock surface (usually a cavity) covered with tiny individual crystals. These sparkly and opalescent crystals provide a reflective surface reminiscent of sugar or snow. Whether the crystals appear on the surface of the mineral or are recessed into a crevice the result is the same, a stunning gemstone. And stunning is a perfect description of Heather’s pieces that incorporate these incredible stones.
By utilizing century old methods of metalsmithing, Heather Benjamin’s jewelry is designed and created around a stone, gem or fossil. Her work is available in a satin or hammered finish, and offered in sterling silver or 22k vermeil. Each stone is bezel set and these designs are inspired by cultures and their relationship to the sea and to nature. Her work has been described as organic elegance meets chic and bohemian and it is this perfect juxtaposition of these elements that makes her jewelry unparalleled in style and creativity.
Kong Lung Trading has a wonderful collection of Heather Benjamin’s fabulous one of a kind jewelry pieces in stock. Come in and pick out your special necklace. Isn’t it time to shine?
Book of the Month: LOCALS ONLY
by Hugh Holland, edited by Steve Crist
Publisher Notes:
One afternoon in 1975, a young photographer named Hugh Holland drove up Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Los Angeles and
encountered skateboarders carving up the drainage ditches along the side of the canyon. Immediately transfixed by their grace and athleticism, he knew he had found an amazing subject. Although not a skateboarder himself, for the next three years Holland never tired of documenting skateboarders surfing the streets of Los Angeles, parts of the San Fernando Valley, Venice Beach, and as far away as San Francisco and Baja California, Mexico.
During the mid-1970s, Southern California was experiencing a serious drought, leaving an abundance of empty swimming pools available for trespassing skateboarders to practice their tricks. From these suburban backyard haunts to the asphalt streets that connected them, this was the place that created the legendary Dogtown and Z-Boys skateboarders. With their requisite bleached blonde hair, tanned bodies, tube socks and Vans, these young outsiders are masterfully captured against a sometimes harsh but always sunny Southern California landscape in LOCALS ONLY.
Holland’s skateboard photographs were first shown at M+B Gallery in Los Angeles in 2006. Following the success of the show, his work has been shown in Paris and New York City and used in American Apparel publicity campaigns. Holland resides in Los Angeles.

BLENKO GLASS. Exquisite color, skilled craftsmen, and creative designs have made Blenko famous in the ancient craft of hand-blown glass. Over the years, talented designers have developed contemporary new designs for our skilled artisans, who have learned the difficult techniques of glass blowing through many years of practice.
The uniqueness of hand-blown glass cannot be compared to that of machine-formed glass - a process which produces items all exactly alike but without character. Because the glass is made in small batches and the processes are performed by hand, it is common to observe small air bubbles, lines or individual marks left by Blenko’s craftsmen. These are not flaws - but rather the distinctive nature of the hand-made process - which identify and magnify the uniqueness of each piece of glass.
In a world of increasing automation and standardization, everyone at Blenko prides themselves in paying particular attention to the forms and designs, which stay true to the tradition of hand blown glass. Everyone all needs - now more than ever - hand made objects that are unique and inspiring.
A collector’s item for over 50 years, let Kong Lung Trading help you start your collection today.
ROOTWORKS by Enricoproducts. Each of Enrico’s Root Works hand carved bowls, platters and vases are uniquely beautiful and stand alone as a natural work of art. These fantastic pieces are carved from a species of Chinese Fir called Shan Mu, which grows abundantly deep in the countryside of central China. The stumps left by logging are reclaimed prior to replanting and hand-carved by local artisans.
These beautiful and practical items bring their own unique organic charm into any home. Why not bring a little bit of nature into yours this holiday season with these amazing pieces?

TILSON DESIGN WORKS. Created in lower Manhattan, Janna Tilson Weinstein’s work focuses on handmade, functional ceramics that blend modern designs with an organic sensibility. Her work is texturally driven with patterned carvings in her Aura and Lena lines and with raised multiple clay strands found in her Anemone Series. Tilson has developed her own original color palette using her own glaze recipes, which are dishwasher and food safe.
Whether you want a whole dinnerware set, a cool new vase or just settle on one amazing serving piece, Tilson’s work comes alive when its being used. Stop by and put one on your holiday wish list today.

This Little Piggy Went to Kong Lung.

Our love for animals is apparent when you visit our store and are greeted by Olive and Mochi our resident Jack Russells cruising around in search a head scratches or leftover bakery goods. Chow our store kitty will probably be curled up taking one of his many cat naps in his basket behind the sales counter. But what we are crazy for right now at Kong Lung Trading is pigs. Yes pigs! We are offering an array of piggy products from a collection of hand painted porcelain sleeping pigs, a symbol of luck and family harmony, next you have to meet Beatrice the Pig, a patchwork critter doll that will melt your heart and to take all of your new friends home we have Envirosax’s piggy in the middle print.
Shhhhh...Sleeping Pigs
When the pig was domesticated in China, owning one was considered to be an indication of a common man’s prosperity and good fortune. If you were lucky enough to own a pig you took very good care of it and that meant it slept in your home. This revealed that your life was pretty secure and happy. In fact, the Chinese character for ‘home’ is made up of the symbols for ‘roof’ and ‘pig’ thus the legend that a pig under the roof equals happiness for the home. Each porcelain pig from Art de Asia rests upon its own little red pillow and comes with a card explaining the tradition and its meaning.
Look Look it’s Nook-Nook
Beatrice and her sisters are handmade with love and care in Chiang Mai, Thailand by Urban Oasis’ family-run workshop. Nook-nook means lot’s of fun in Thai and with this whimsical collection of patchwork critters we are sure that Beatrice the pig and her friends Marcel the Monkey, Buster the Bulldog and Daisy the Deer will brighten you day and put a smile on your face. “Handmade is more that touching something with hands, it is touching something with imagination, creating objects that radiate uniqueness and embrace individuality.”
Carry the Environmental Message in Style
Help planet earth everyday by carrying an Envirosax reusable bag. In its lifetime, each Envirosax bag saves the planet from approximately 6000 one time use plastic bags which kills wildlife by clogging waterways or will float in our oceans for thousands of years. Envirosax bags are tested for safety and strength and will hold up to 44 pounds. They are washable and won’t fade, instead they help to create a brighter ecological future. Will you be taking your piggy in the middle Envirosax to the market? We hope so.

Lori Bonn
We love a woman in power. And when it comes to fashion, Queen Victoria reigned supreme. Her ornate slide charm bracelets were all the rage in 19th century England. Each of her charms had a story. Pearl charms to symbolize her wealth, Onyx charms to mourn the death of her prince. Amethyst charms to prevent drunkeness (those were prudish times, after all). She combined her charms to make bracelets with personal significance for herself and her high society friends. Queen Victoria's charms are the inspiration behind Bonn Bons, a fresh, modern take on the fashion of the Victorian era. This fun concept includes charmes with fun names like, “Picking up the Pieces”, “Gold digger” or “Little Pearl of Wisdom”. Whatever slide charm you choose, you will cherish this fine piece of jewelry and be inspired to add another slide charm to celebrate the moments in your life that you want to cherish & remember.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Kong Lung Trading

We would like to take a moment to reflect on everything that has happened this year and be thankful for friends with two legs, four legs and wings, family and all that we have been blessed with. It is really easy to get caught up in all the negatives, especially when media sources are constantly beating the bad news drum. But perhaps it is unique opportunity to realize all that we do have. We want to thank all of our valued friends and customers for sharing their precious time with us.
Happy Holidays from (left to right) Daphne, Mochi, Olive and Chow. Here's to a great 2010 and beyond.
